Hidden Disabilities
In Australia one in five people have a disability and 80% of these are hidden. A hidden disability is not immediately obvious to others.
Hidden Disabilities include autism, dementia, chronic pain, anxiety, hearing impairment and a range of other conditions.
As a result, it can be difficult for others to identify, acknowledge or understand the challenges people with a hidden disability can face.
Hidden Disability Sunflower
The Hidden Disability Sunflower is a symbol that people can wear to let others know they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately obvious and may need a helping hand, assistance or simply more time.
Latrobe City Council has adopted the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to help support and raise awareness of people with a hidden disability.
Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyards will be available for free to community members (or their carers) at the International Rose Garden Festival, accessible from the Events Caravan upon request.
Latrobe City Council Event Staff have been trained to identify people wearing the Hidden Disability Sunflower at the International Rose Garden Festival and to provide them the assistance they require.

Quiet Space and Sensory Space
At the International Rose Garden Festival there will be a Quiet Space located in Latrobe City Council Head Quarters and a Sensory Space located at the Festival to support people with disabilities and medical conditions to attend this event. For the exact locations of these areas please see the Festival Program Map.
Both type of rooms help to reduce anxiety and stress for people with disabilities and medical conditions. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult in order to enter these spaces.
The Quiet Space is for anyone needing a short time away from the stress and simulation of the festival. The space is not a social space.
The Sensory Space is for anyone needing a safe space to use sensory strategies to relax and regulate.
